A lot of families who'd genuinely benefit from treatment abroad talk themselves out of exploring it simply because the process feels too complicated to figure out. It isn't, once it's laid out in order. Here's what actually happens, from first contact to coming home.

1

Initial inquiry

A call, WhatsApp message, or form submission — usually the same day or next business day, a program (or a resource like this one) will respond with basic information and next steps.

2

Clinical intake call

A more detailed conversation with clinical staff about the specific situation — substance history, any co-occurring mental health conditions, prior treatment attempts — to determine whether the program is an appropriate fit and what level of care is needed.

3

Pricing and payment confirmation

An itemized quote based on the intake conversation, along with payment logistics — most programs abroad are cash-pay, so this step usually includes confirming payment method and timing.

4

Travel planning

Booking flights, confirming visa requirements (most destinations on this site offer visa-free entry for US citizens for qualifying stays), and coordinating airport pickup, which many facilities include.

5

Arrival and admission

Airport transfer to the facility, an in-person clinical assessment, and orientation to the program — house rules, schedule, and what the first few days will look like.

6

Medical detox, if needed

For substances requiring medical supervision, this is typically the first several days, with 24-hour monitoring before transitioning into the therapeutic phase of treatment.

7

Active treatment

Individual therapy, group sessions, and — depending on the program — family therapy, adventure or holistic therapy, and psychiatric care for any co-occurring conditions, typically over 30, 60, or 90 days.

8

Discharge planning

Before departure, a reputable program builds a specific continuing-care and relapse-prevention plan — not a generic handout, but a plan tailored to the person's situation at home.

9

Continuing care

Many programs maintain contact after discharge through telehealth check-ins, alumni groups, or coordination with a provider back home — ask specifically what this looks like before you book, since it varies significantly.

The whole process, start to finish: initial inquiry to arrival typically takes anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on urgency and travel logistics — it's rarely the months-long ordeal people sometimes imagine.
Demystifying the process doesn't make the decision easier emotionally. But it does remove "I don't even know how this would work" as a reason to avoid looking into it seriously.
